Stephen Everhart , 62, was born in Elyria, OH. At 13, he swam for a small Yacht Club team, in Ft Lauderdale, FL. His team won many competitions and
events against larger teams. After a two year break playing basketball and
baseball, at 15, he got back to swimming. At a county championship meet, in a 50 backstroke, he came out of nowhere and placed 2nd, out-touching several superstars. He was selected to join the city team. "I soon gave up my position, as I was moving on to high school, and girls and baseball and football." He confesses, "I think the real reason was I like warm water and weather, and swimming in an unheated salt water pool in the winter, was not fun for me."
In 1964, he attended Florida State Univ. He swam in intramural meets, but had two total shoulder separations, which he received from playing intramural football at FSU. He hasn't had them repaired, so he has to be careful that they don't dislocate.
After he graduated from FSU, he continued his studies at the U of Florida College of Law, earning his JD. He has been a Prosecutor, did Criminal Defense work, was a partner in a law firm. Currently, he is a Law Professor at Stetson U College of Law. He spent 2004-2005 in China as a Fulbright Lecturer. "I taught dispute resolution courses at all of their top law schools, and in my travels, I met and married my wife, Hanling."
Everhart joined the Mavericks in 2000, after injuries from running and martial arts. "Coach Hutinger and Margie have extended and expanded the quality of my life. If I hadn't found this great coaching team, I would have quit competitive swimming, ended up fat and out of shape. Thanks. I can never repay you for what you have done for me and my family."
He has achieved several Top Ten rankings. "My goals are to continue to honor my coach, wife and family, and try to accomplish even more."
Everhart lives in Redington Beach, FL and Wuhan City, China, with his wife Hanling and daughter Han Jia Yi (Sabrina). They will be at the Olympics, cheering on the swimmers. His daughter, Shannon, has two children.
